Actually, almost every horse race is limited specifically to Thoroughbred horses. While Arabians, Quarter Horses, Paints, and Appaloosas also race, the major races - the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes, Belmont Stakes, and Breeders' Cup - are limited to Thoroughbreds only.

The mother said the HORSE who crossed the finish line last wins. So, the brother and sister switch horses, and race as hard as they can. The horse that either one is riding (the other sibling's horse) will finish first, and the horse actually belonging to the rider is last, and wins.
