The simple answer is Britain and France. Keep in mind: But Canada at different times was shaped differently and took up less space then modern day Canada. The earliest European colony in Canada was Icelandic and started by vikings around 1000 but was not permanent. Canada itself was not a colony but a series of colonies. And Canada was home to many native tribes each a "country" itself long before European exploration
