1939 was the first NCAA tournament. The teams participating were: Oregon, Texas, Oklahoma, Utah State, Villanova, Brown, Wake Forest, Ohio State Ohio State and Oregon played in the Final with Oregon winning the first NCAA Tournament.
The first ever basketball game was played in 1891 at Springfield College in Springfield, Massachusetts by students who's teacher, Dr. James Naismith, was trying to keep occupied during a rainy day. Therefore, it wasn't an actual team, but rather a bunch of gym class students.

1939 Coaches and teams toured but the NCAA was asked to underwrite the championships and assume fiscal and organizational responsibility for future tournaments. The NCAA agreed.
