There is no source for the above number (left by another contributor) but the number seems to be too high....

According to wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_football_clubs_in_England) there are 1177 clubs in England, which has a population of 51m. That works out to one club per 43,700 people. With 6.8b people in the world, if the same proportions are kept, that would work out to 157,000 clubs in the world. But we would expect England to have a much higher proportion of clubs per capita than most other countries... so it should be probably closer to 100,000 clubs in the world.
