533 professional bullfighters have been killed since 1700, of which 79 have been matadors (the others are picadors, banderilleros and novilleros). Full lists, including names and histories are available via my post on the subject on my blog, The Last Arena.

In a standard bullfight there are three matadors and each will kill two animals. Occasionally, two matadors will fight mano a mano (hand to hand) and each will fight three bulls.

Since the current style of bullfighting came into being in about 1726 about 40 matadors total have died in the ring. This does not include banderilleros, picadores or novilleros. That is much less than one per year.

Nearly every matador will be injured each year from tossings that may result in broken bones and abrasions to gorings that are the most serious injuries and can end a matador's career or, at the very least, keep him from practicing his profession for several months. There are really no statistics that would tell the full story.
