Jack Nicklaus won 20 major Golf championships. They were:

Masters Tournament (6 ) - 1963, 1965, 1966, 1972, 1975, 1986

U.S. Open (4) - 1962, 1967, 1972, 1980

British Open (3) - 1966, 1970, 1978

PGA Championship (5) - 1963, 1971, 1973, 1975, 1980

U.S. Amateur (2) - 1959, 1961

British Amateur (0)

These tournaments used to be considered the standard benchmark for

"major championships". When Jack won the Masters in 1986, it was universally recognised as his 20th. For some reason this has changed over the last few years

as now you more often than not hear about his 18 "professional majors", with people less willing to accept and recognise his two US Amateur wins.

Naturally, many wonder if Tiger Woods is responsible for this change in historical thinking. Well if he is then he shouldn't be, for Tiger Woods won 3 U.S. Amateurs (1994, 1995, 1996).

So if you care only about professional majors then the current scoreboard (thru 2007) reads Jack 18 Tiger 14. If you care for a more traditionalist view (as I do) then the scoreboard would read Jack 20 Tiger 17.

For the record, here are Tiger's major golf championships:

Masters Tournament (4) - 1997, 2001, 2002, 2005

U.S. Open (3) - 2000, 2002, 2008

British Open (3) - 2000, 2005, 2006

PGA Championship (4) - 1999, 2000, 2006, 2007

U.S. Amateur (3) - 1994, 1995, 1996

British Amateur (0)
