Depends on your league. Generally at least 10 are allowed, 1 for each defensive position (4 outfielders in slowpitch softball). Some leagues allow 1 or 2 extra batters that function similar to a designated hitter but they do not hit for a defensive player, they are just an extra hitter in the lineup. They are usually allowed so that more people can play. One is allowed in open or unisex leagues and two are allowed in coed leagues so that the number of men and women are equal.
