There were no Winter Olympics in 1996.
Great Britain was one of 14 teams to compete in the first Games, the 1896 Summer Olympics, and has competed at every Games. Athletes representing Great Britain have won 715 medals at the Summer Olympic Games, and another 22 at the Winter Olympic Games. Great Britain is the only team to have won at least one gold medal at every Summer Games. The most successful British Olympian by gold medals won is Steve Redgrave, who won five consecutive gold medals; in the Coxed four in 1984 then Coxless pair 1988 to 1996 and finally Coxless four in 2000. Redgrave and cyclist Bradley Wiggins are the most bemedalled British Olympians with six medals each.
The United States won a total of 101 medals at the 1996 Summer Olympics.
Canada won 22 medals at the 1996 Summer Olympics: 3 gold, 11 silver, and 8 bronze.

Great Britain won two gold medals at the 1896 Olympics: 1) John Pius Boland in men's singles tennis. 2) Launceston Elliot in one handed weightlifting. Great Britain also won 3 silver and 2 bronze for a total of 7 medals.
Ben Ainslie has won four Olympic gold medals in sailing. He won gold in the Laser class at the 2000 Sydney Olympics, and then went on to win three consecutive gold medals in the Finn class at the 2004 Athens Olympics, 2008 Beijing Olympics, and 2012 London Olympics.
