∙ 9y agoThere are 250 Division I football programs that will compete in 2014. Division I has two subdivisions, the FBS (Football Bowl Subdivision) and the FCS (Football Championship Subdivision). The FBS was formerly knowns as Division I-A and the FCS was formerly knows as Division I-AA.
In the FBS, there are 128 football programs that will compete in 2014.
In the FCS, there are 122 football programs that will compete in 2014.

∙ 11y agoPresently 120 in the FBS (formerly called Division 1-A) and 124 in the FCS (formerly called Division 1-AA). Four teams will be transitioning from the FCS to the FBS in 2013.
Division 1 A alone has 10. Texas, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, North Texas, UTEP, Rice, Houston, Baylor, SMU, TCU. In 2012 2 more are to join Division 1 A, UTSA and Texas State in the Western Athletic Conference (WAC)
Each state is different. Some, like Alaska, Vermont, Rhode Island, Deleware, New Hampshire and Maine do not have a single Division I-FBS (formerly Division I-A) program. Others, like Texas, have many (Texas, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, North Texas, Texas-San Antonio, Texas State, Rice, Baylor, Texas-El Paso, etc.).
