Fourteen [14] out of fifteen [15] jockeys in the first Kentucky Derby were African Americans. The inaugural Derby was held in the afternoon of May 17, 1875. The winning rider was Oliver Lewis [1856 - 1924], an African American who subsequently became a Kentucky businessman in Lexington. The only white jockey was Billy Lakeland, who placed 10th on Ascension, one of two chestnut fillies participating in the Derby.

Many millions of dollars are wagered on the Kentucky Derby from betting outlets all over the country. In the 2010 Kentucky Derby, over $47 million was wagered on the Win-Place-Show pool alone. The exacta pool was over $21 million. The trifecta and superfecta pools were $25 million and $8 million, respectively.

A sport that is in kentucky is horse racing. There are over 500 farms in Kentucky alone, and many famous races such as the Kentucky Derby.
No fillies have won the Grand National but twelve mares have won the race: Miss Mowbray (1852), Anatis (1860), Jealousy (1861), Emblem (1863), Emblematic (1864), Casse Tete (1872), Empress (1880), Zoedone (1883), Frigate (1889), Shannon Lass (1902), Sheila's Cottage (1948) and Nickel Coin (1951). Fillies and mares are both female horses but fillies are aged 4 years or younger.
