How many ballet grades are there and which grade do you normally start pointe work?

Acutally - it depends on where you go. If you dance with BTDA for example, it goes to grade 5, then intermediate and up. If, like myself, you dance with the royal Ballet school, it goes to grade 8. pointe work does not start at a specific grade.
I dance with the North Wales School of Dance and really, the pointe work strats around grade 5. But the ballet teachers will only let you start if they think that you are ready (ankles are strong, point is good) You really have to work hard and pointe is quite dangerous, you can brake your ankles.

Well in my dance studio there are 3 levels, beginning, intermediate and advanced. I'm 11 and I'm in intermediate. The dance studio is Center Pointe Dance in Phoenix Az P.S. Point levels are beginning and advanced Some ballet exam boards use numbered grades, Primary, Grade 1, Grade 2 up to around Grade 6. After this, the levels may be named, Intermediate, Advanced etc.

Beginning pointe work doesn't always depend on how long you may have been dancing. For example if you are older than say 12 or 13 you may only need 1 or 2 years of ballet training before beginning pointe work. This is because pointe shoes can damage younger feet. However some young students are simply strong enough to hold themselves en pointe. Also it depends on what level of ballet you are. Once you reach pre-elementary then pointe shoes are compulsory if you wish to sit the exam for that grade. In preparation for pre-elementary then often dancers will spend 6 months or so before they reach senior ballet, preparing themselves and breaking in new pointe shoes so that the transition into senior ballet smoother. AnswerI'm really sorry to tell you that you will never be able to go on pointe. Pointe work normally starts in intermediate foundation ballet when you are about 14-15. When you reach this grade you will be 17 and it will be to late to begin as pointe work mostly begins from age 9-12 only. AnswerI turned 15 last week, and I started ballet 2 months ago when I was 14. I have private lessons (another girl and I). We were both complete beginners to ballet, though I take tap and the other girl takes jazz. Our teacher started us at Grade 3, and said that this week we would move onto Grade 4. My teacher then told us today that we were actually going to begin Intermediate Foundation (ie. skip 7 grades). I was really surprised, but my teacher says that in a years time we will do the Intermediate Foundation exam and then start Intermediate work. Intermed. Foundation, as you may be aware, is when you normally start pointe work, and the average age for intermediate foundation is around 13-16. I am proud that I am working at the same level as my 16 year old friend who has been doing ballet for 12 years!!! My teacher is just pushing us to do and achieve our best.So basically, don't give up because I am 15 and beginning pointe work late this year and next year or sometime. I am on pointes and I am twelve. I'm in grade 5 ballet. But i do an extra class called Inter Foundation, which helped us to get enough strength to go on pointe in Grade 4. So you should probably wait until either your teacher says or until you are in Grade 5/6

There is definatly NO CERTAIN GRADE, it depends on the strangth and tecnique the student has. Genreraly students go on pointe when they reach Intermediate Foundation but this isn't a definite limit. The student must be doing ballet for at least 3 years and doing 4 classes a week. (I am in grade 5 and have been doing pointe work for a year now, but i think it was way to early and i am causing damage to my feet. i have also only been dancing for 1 year.)
