The New York Mets have appeared in four World Series. In 1969, the "Miracle Mets", led by pitching ace Tom Seaver, played the Baltimore Orioles, beating them 4 games to 1. In 1973, they played the Oakland Athletics, losing the series in seven games. In 1986, they beat the Boston Red Sox in a World Series remembered for the dramatic sixth game in which the Mets rallied from a 2-run deficit with two outs in the bottom of the 10th inning, sealing the victory when a meekly hit ground ball went through first-baseman Bill Buckner's legs. The Mets went on to win game 7 and the series. In 2000, the Mets played their crosstown rivals, the Yankees, in a "subway series", losing to the Yankees in five games.

He remained with the Mets throughout his career and was still on the team in 1986 when they won their second World Series title.
