The Olympic torch relay for the London 2012 Olympics took a total of 70 days. It began its journey on May 19, 2012, in Land's End, Cornwall, and traveled across the UK before reaching the Olympic Stadium in London on July 27, 2012, for the opening ceremony. The relay covered approximately 8,000 miles and involved 8,000 torchbearers.
It stays alight for the whole of the Games. It is lit in the Opening Ceremony and extinguished in the Closing Ceremony.
