In Wisconsin high school hockey, each period is 17 minutes long. There are three periods in a game, and if the score is tied at the end of regulation, the game may go into overtime, which consists of an additional period. The overtime period is typically played in a 5-on-5 format and lasts for 8 minutes, with sudden death rules applying.

When the teams tie in regulation, under NHL rules they play a 5 minute overtime then if they are still tied, they participate in a shootout
