Prior to the tournament, the Masters' organization decides on the prize money for each finishing position. This year 1st place paid 1.35 million, second was 810,000 or thereabouts, and so on down the line. Tiger was alone in 2nd place so he got all of the 2nd place money. Snedeker and Sink tied for 3rd, so they each get an equal share of the prize money for the next two positions, 3rd & 4th. If six people tied for 2nd they would take the prize money for 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th and divide by six. If in this case 1 person finished alone in 3rd place, he would get the prize money originallly assigned to the 8th place finisher, which is actually exactly where he finished....behind 7 other golfers. That's the general idea anyway. Had Snedeker made his birdie putt on 18 he would have shared the 2nd and 3rd place prize money with Tiger, which would have meant that he would have made close to 700 thousand rather than the 435k that he got for sharing half of the 3rd and 4th place money.
