Hurling is one of Ireland's two main national sports, the other being Gaelic Football. Hurling is the most unique of the two. For centuries it has been part of Irish culture. The founding of the Gaelic Athletic Association(GAA) in 1884, was done to promote Hurling and other Irish sports more widely and to have them more organised. The GAA has very strong Irish cultural aspects going well beyond the sports it looks after. Irish music, Irish dancing, the Irish language and other things are all promoted by the GAA. For the nationalist people of Ireland, it is seen as a very patriotic organisation, and so not as popular with the unionist people who would have a stronger passion for British cultural things. The complexities of all of this are too wide ranging to give here.
Hurling has a huge significance in Ireland and its main final and the Gaelic Football final, which are both played on separate Sundays in September, are the two largest sporting events in Ireland. Irish people all over the world take a great interest in these two sports, as one of the ways of maintaining and expressing their Irish identity. GAA clubs have been founded in many parts of the world where large Irish communities live. Irish people at home and abroad seen wearing sports shirts are often wearing the shirts of their home club or county.
