An offical starts the tip by explaing the directions of which each team will be going (i.e., their respective baskets). After that, the officalwill meet the two players ready for the jump ball at the half-court line and will throw the ball straight up in the air, giving both players a fair chance at winning the tip. If for some reason, the ball is thrown up at an angle, or a player touches it before it reaches the highest point, the other offical(s) may signal for a redo on the tip ball.
