A touch down is actually called a TRY. Its followed by a conversion attempt where the ball is attempted to be kicked between the goal posts (and above the cross bar). Then a restart occurs in the centre of the pitch with the team who have just conceded the try kick the ball back into the attacking teams area> the intention is to chase the ball and claim it by catching it.
In rugby, a try is scored when a player touches the ball down in the opponent's in-goal area. This earns the team 5 points.
