Typically, you should be able to fit your fist between your groin and the saddle. Of course, position and discipline are major factors.
The main strap on an English style saddle is called the girth. This is what keeps the saddle on the horse. But there are other types of straps also. There is what is called a 'breastcollar', which keeps the saddle from sliding back too far on the back. There is a 'crupper' which works the other way and keeps the saddle from moving too far forward. There are different kinds of martingales, standing or running, which are usually for training purposes but should only be used if you know what you are doing. This combines the breastcollar with the horse's bridle or bit. These are the most common types of straps but certainly not all available to equine enthusiests.
When you are cantering, it is important not to slouch forward into what I call the Frog Point. Sit up and listen to the beats 1, 2, 3. On the first beat Push your butt down. On the second beat, push your butt back. This will put your shoulders back too. On the third beat, rotate your pelvis in. It should help!
it depend on what tyoe of riding your doing. for example if your galloping towards a barrel u sit forward in your saddle but if ur riding a cow horse us sit balanced on the back of your saddle to have more controlfor English riding:for all: you shouldn't be either leaning too far forward, or back. your shoulder should be lined up with your healwalk, you should be relaxed, but still alert and sitting in about the center of the saddle.trot: for a post you lift your butt out of the saddle when your horse rises - you come slightly out of the saddle, not straight up, but slightly forward.canter: as my old trainer desctribed it to me: you kind of "scoop" with your butt.gallop: there is a position called half seat were you lift your butt slightly out of the saddle so its easier for your horse to move faster, if you do half seat instead of sitting down, you will find that your horse is more willing to go faster.jumping: "2-point" its where you lean forward in the saddle (butt up in the air) with a strait back. only go up into 2-point when you feel your horse jump, if you do it to early, your horse may take a little dive before the jump and it will feel kind of akward (trust me). and if you are jumping small fences (2-2 1/2ft) you should stay in the 2-point position for a stride afterthat's about it :o)~Bella

I use my breast plate for looks in the show ring, but it can be used to help keep the saddle from sliding backwards when the horse is moving. I use it on my horse that has almost no withers to prevent the saddle from sliding too far to the side.
If you're a guy you should be just able to touch your prostate with your finger. It's pretty safe to put the whole finger length in. Just watch your nails that you don't scratch yourself. The membranes in there are easily torn.
My butt farts on your penguin ( . Y . )
Because Brett Favre wears them... What a ridiculous comment to make and so untrue. You are far more likely to get sores if you do hold your butt cheeks tight. me i ride for hours at a time and with no ill effects in a norm pair of trousers or shorts some days. While it may be pleasing for a guy to see a lady in tight jeans etc that is about all in my eyes they are good for, i hate jeans
Before any tack can go on the horse he must be groomed to remove any dirt and debris from his coat. Once his coat and feet are clean you can saddle him. Standing on his left side place a clean saddle pad on the withers, the front of the pad should line up with the top of the withers just before the neck. Slide the pad back toward to back, the front of the pad should be by the back part of the withers. Make sure you don't push the pad too far back (behind the withers). With the pad in place take the saddle and gently place it on the pad, making sure there is about an inch of pad beyond the front of the saddle and a couple of inches in the back. Make sure to put your fingers under the front part of the pad by the withers, lifting the pad a little to let air circulate to the back. Tighten the girth slowly. After about 5 minutes of riding be sure to check the girth again.

Well when you start to make a move at a dance or something slowly head your hands for her butt. When or if you get that far squeeze if she likes it she'll laugh if not you still got to feel her butt.
