Each division has requirements including: minimum number of sports sponsored, gender balance in athletics, minimum amounts of participation in competition, and limits on financial aid awards. In effect, a college decides which division to be in depending on the amount of resources it wants to allocate to athletics, but larger colleges will tend to be division I, and smaller colleges will tend to be division III.
