Say the ball was hit to the shortstop (6) and was thrown to the first baseman (3) for an out. You would write 6-3 inside the picture of the field, the write a 1 with a circle around it to record that an out had been made. If a player makes an error, lets say the shortstop, then it would be recorded 6e-3. It would only be recorded this way if the player made it safely to the base. If the player was still out it would no be considered an error.
