Winning is decided by the first car/driver to complete the alloted distance, eg: 500 miles or 500 laps ( a lap is one complete circut of the track). Also if there is bad weather, stockcars cannot run in wet weather as there are no treads on the tires, the driver leading at the halfway point is declared the winner. The winnings are determined by the car Owner(s), Driver, Sponsors, and the contract or agreement made before the race, smaller short-track racing could be a percentage of the purse, plus bonuses, bonuses can play a big part depending on winning or placing.

It depends on the driver and the race. If a driver crashes out of a race fairly early, he won't make much money because he wasn't racing for very long while the winner generally makes the most. People with a big name, like Jimmie Johnson, Denny Hamlin, Kyle Busch, and Tony Stewart, will make more money because they are almost guaranteed to be interviewed and on camera. This way, their sponsors will also get air time and will pay those drivers more. The better you do, the better sponsors you can attract, and vice versa, so it's a cycle. Making the chase, and winning the chase especially, will make a driver a lot of money as well.

A Nascar race ends when the driver's take the checkered flag, completing the final lap. In the event that the race has to go into overtime, Nascar will use a green-white-checker finish. This will happen when there is a late race caution, not to have to end the race under the yellow flag.

nascar is scored using a point system. if you lead a lap you get 5 points. if you win a race it is 10 ( i think) you also get points for where you finish
