Best Answer

The three division winners in each league earn spots in the playoffs. The fourth spot in each league is given to the non-divisonal-winning team with the best record in each league. This fourth team is called the wild card team.

Which team won the 2009 wild card race?

The Major League Baseball (MLB) 2009 Wild Card race was won by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays of the American League (AL) with a regular season record of 91-71 (.562 winning percentage) and the St. Louis Cardinals of the National League (NL) with a regular season record of 90-72 (.556 winning percentage). Neither team advanced to the 2009 MLB World Series.

Who does the wildcard team play in the MLB playoffs?

That would depend on what team has the best winning percentage in the league. Generally, the wild card team plays the division winner with the best winning percentage. However, if the division winner with the best winning percentage is in the same division as the wild card team, then the wild card team will play the division winner with the second best winning percentage and the division winner with the best winning percentage will play the other division winner. MLB is the only major sport that sets up their playoff system this way. This would keep the Yankees and Red Sox from playing in the first round of the playoffs.
