It is very easy for a footballer to damage his/her knee, the constant impact on it whilst it is changing direction at speed, jumping and running will affect the cartilage and could end up wearing it away. There isn't really a way to prevent it either, just strengthen the muscles ligaments and tendons around it and your knee will be able to handle the mechanical stresses that come with playing this sport.
