The five runners' places are totaled and that is the score for that team (so if a team's runners placed 1, 8, 10, 15 and 18, their score ould be 52). The team with the lowest score wins.

Running cross country is quite simple. the ultimate goal of the race is to get the lowest place possible. Cross country races can range from 3 miles to an 8k (5 miles) depending of level of competition.
It depends on the size of the meet. Some races are combined races where all grades race together. Some races go by grade while some go by JV and Varsity races. Boy and girl races are not combined.
