There are four ways to score in Field Hockey. Two are very similar, but one is somewhat rarer and the last is almost nonexistent.

• The first way is the field goal. This is when a player of the attacking team plays the ball in the circle, after which the ball crosses wholly (all the way over, with no doubt) the backline between the goalposts and under the crossbar. It does not matter if the ball is played by another attacker or a defender while in the circle at all.
• The second way is the penalty corner. This usually involves a set-play, and can be done in much the same way as a field goal - some penalty corners degrade to field goals after the defence forces the corner to end. There are several minor additional requirements for a penalty corner to score a goal, mostly dealing with the position of the ball, players, whether the penalty corner has ended and whether a shot has been taken.
• The third, rarer way is the penalty stroke. There are many technical aspects of a stroke, but it boils down to one attacker having a single shot from the penalty spot in front of the goal, and the goalkeeper trying to stop them scoring. No other play is permitted to interfere and the attacker has only one play at the ball (unlike in football where the ball is in play as soon as it is touched).
• The fourth way is the penalty goal. This is almost solely a theoretical scenario - penalty strokes are rare enough, and penalty goals are nearly unheard of. It is a goal awarded when a player defending a penalty stroke prevents a goal being scored by any offense besides 'breaking' (moving from the line early, in which case it is replayed and the defender receives a green card). If the defender is a goalkeeper, the only way for this to happen is by using the back of the stick; for any other defender, it means using anything but the legal side of it.

To score a goal in field hockey you must strike/deflect or has touched an attacking playing inside the circle (Semi-Circle) or 'D' as it is known so that it enters the net/goal/cage and crosses the line fully. The whole ball must cross the line for it to be a goal.

first, you need to know that you're going to get scored on, you can't help it. there will be some REALLY nice shots that seem impossible to stop.

second, give yourself a limit on what you want to keep the score under.. so under 10 or 15.

third, your goals should be about you, your save percentage, your clears etc.

as a goalie, your soul job is protect the cage, but your defenses' soul job is to protect YOU.
