Just exercise. Whether its cardio or resistance it helps raise your metabolism and therefore use (or burn) more energy. Put it this way: a toned person with a high metabolism will be using more energy just sitting than a fat person will be when sitting. In addition, if you do resistance training you will make muscle rather than lose it.
