It depends on the materials to which you are referring. I have heard that certain stains, including grease stains, can be removed from carpet with WD-40, of all things. If you are referring to clearing grease and gunpowder residue out of a firearm, try Gunscrubber. It will blast everything off the firearm. Just remember to lubricate afterwards.

Oh yeah, and Dawn dish detergent works as well for fabrics.

How can grease reduce friction?

Grease reduces friction because the two original materials are no longer touching each other. If you have a piece of steel rubbing against another piece of steel then there is friction between them. If grease is on the surfaces then you have molecules of grease rubbing against other molecules of grease. Grease is slippery stuff as it has a very lowCoefficient of friction. Every material has a coefficient of friction but with steel it is quite high. Teflon is very very low. Proper name polytetrafluorethylene or ptfe.

Why can the fluids used to dry-clean clothing remove grease even when water cannot?

Water cannot interact with grease, due to its high surface tension, so when the water is removed from the clothing after cleaning it, the grease remains. The fluids used to dry clean clothing are actually chemical solvents. They dissolve the grease, so when the solvent is removed, the grease is also removed.
