I assume you are talking about "games behind" or "games back" (GB) in the standings. GB is calculated by taking the number of fewer wins one team has compared to another, adding number of more losses and dividing by 2. Example: The Giants have 20 wins and 10 losses, the Dodgers have 18 wins and 12 losses. Both teams have played 30 games, the Dodgers have 2 fewer wins and 2 more losses. 2+2 divided by 2 is 2. Dodgers are 2 games back. Half games occur when the teams have palyed an unequal and odd number of games. Giants are 20-10, Dodgers are 19-12. Dodgers have one fewer win and two more losses. 1+2 divided by 2 is one and a half. When one team has more wins AND more losses than another, same rule applies. Giants have suffered rainouts and are1-0, Dodgers are 2-2. Dodgers have one more win but two more losses. 1 plus -2= -1 divided by 2 Dodgers are one half game behind.
