You have a clutch on your left handle-bar that you engage each time you click through the gears via a gear stick at your left foot. You start in first gear and pull in the clutch each time you click up a gear - 2nd, 3rd, 4th, etc. Similarily going back down through the gears you pull in the clutch at each gear change for ease of tramsmission.
Not all bikes have "gear". Straddle bikes and direct drive bikes - with cranks directly attached to a wheel axle - don't have gears.
A gear drive uses gears to drive the camshaft vs a belt or timing chain. Some bikes use a shaft drive vs a chain that is often confused with a gear dive.
Bikes with internal gear hubs offer advantages such as low maintenance, protection from weather, and ease of use compared to bikes with external gear systems.
There are three main types of drive trains for bikes: single-speed, internal gear hub, and derailleur. Single-speed bikes have a single gear ratio, internal gear hub bikes have gears enclosed within the rear hub, and derailleur bikes have gears that shift using a derailleur mechanism. The type of drive train can impact the bike's performance and efficiency by affecting factors such as speed, ease of maintenance, weight, and cost. Single-speed bikes are simple and low maintenance but may limit speed and climbing ability. Internal gear hub bikes offer a range of gears with less maintenance but can be heavier. Derailleur bikes provide a wide range of gears for varying terrains but require more maintenance. Ultimately, the choice of drive train depends on the rider's preferences and intended use of the bike.
Fixed gear bikes are not inherently faster than other types of bikes. Speed is influenced by various factors such as rider strength, terrain, and gear ratios.
There are three main types of chainset bikes available in the market: single-speed, geared, and fixed-gear. Single-speed bikes have one gear ratio, geared bikes have multiple gears for different terrains, and fixed-gear bikes have a single gear with no freewheel mechanism.
In a vehicle, a driving gear is the gear which is driven by the engine. The driving gear helps control the speed the vehicle is in.
Hub gear bikes have several advantages over traditional derailleur bikes, including easier maintenance, protection from damage, and the ability to shift gears while stationary.
Buy them. But some bikes can't.
You can find fixed gear bikes near you at local bike shops, specialty cycling stores, or online retailers.
Gear drive
The drive gear will turn faster. If the driving gear was twice the size of the drive gear, the drive gear would rotate twice for every revolution of the said driving gear.
