Prepping

When prepping to do a fouette you will be in a slight lounge position. You will have your left leg in front bent and your right behind you bent. You should be in a position were your right knee is almost touching the ground but is not. Then your left arm goes straight out to the left and your hands must be stiff but elegant. (tip" tuck in your thumb.) your right arm will be as if its holding a beach ball. curved with barbie doll hands.

Turning

When you are turning you will use the foot in front and go on your toe NOT YOUR HEEL and turn bringing both hands in as if you are holding a beach ball and wont let it go. Now as you are turning you will have to bend to get more momentum to keep turning. So when you foot you are turning on do not bend low, bend slightly. As you bend your feet will go from a poss'e to a straight out pencil leg. you will dip and your arms will go straight out and your legs will come to your side (tip: FEET POINTED) Then you will exit from dip and resume to a poss'e and your arms will return to beach ball position. repeat this as many times as you would like.

Spotting

While doing your turn you must spot to stay straight and to prevent dizziness or falling. You find a high object and watch it with full eye contact until you cant anymore.

What is the difference between fouettes and pique turns?

Fouette turns are done in one stationary position, and pique turns are usually done travelling. Also, in a fouette turn, the working leg does not ever touch the ground, whereas the working leg in a pique turn goes down to the floor between each turn. They are two completely different turns, but these are some basic differences. Also, fouettes are much more difficult, haha.

How do you do a fouetté?

The first step of a fouette is to prepare. You can either start from a pirouette or from lifting your leg out in front moving it to the side and into a pirouette. I prefer starting with a pirouette but it's different from everyone. There is a good video on how to do fouette turns by Autumn Miller on Youtube that you can search, I believe it has how to do the second one but I'm not sure. .Basically, the movement of the fouette is plieing your standing leg and lifting your other leg to the front, then bringing it to the side and similtaneously lifting your supporting leg's foot into releve, (these first two help with momentum), and then bringing your leg into passe for the pirouette. Make sure you turn to the side your lifting leg is on. A good way to get the move down is by doing the movements at the barre without turning. In my opinion, to get better momentum in the beginning, start with the pirouette first preparation. When you do a pirouette first, you go straight into lifting your leg to the front and beginning the cycle again.
