In the beginning of a Chess game, you should always try to take control the center of the board, this gives you more room to position your pieces, and more possibilities to attack.

There are many openings designed to try to control the center, these openings usually have 'breaking points', when all pieces are focused on a single square, usually e4 or d5.

These squares are usually very important to control, as they can give you a massive advantage. The other player will try to defend this square, as well as configuring a counter-attack.

When you're playing in a middle-game, you have to remember that this will decide how the end of the game is like, if it comes to that. You want to try to get passed pawns (pawns that have no opposing pawns on either side of their row). Once you have a good endgame position, you can start to trade off pieces, leaving only a few attackers to try to stop the passed pawn(s).
