It should be leveled as the surface is assembled. If you want to do it right and you know it is not level, you may have to resurface the table. The floor should be leveled first, then the foundation of the table, and then the table surface. The table surface leveling is the fine tuning, done by installing small shims under the slate.

The most important part is leveling and slate and surface completion. A novice cannot learn to assmeble a table properly from a few paragraphs on any website. Unfortunately, many table installers do a poor job as well, detracting fom an enjoyable game. If you have a lot of patience and are willing to re-do the assembly several times, it can be done by the novice. A long and short level are required, along with beeswax and plaster of paris, and all hand tools, including a staple gun.
