The referee controls the game by using his whistle to stop (and sometimes restart) play. He also is the official timekeeper and scorekeeper, whose decisions are final. The referee carries a red card and a yellow card to announce sanctions applied for misconduct. Finally, the referee has two (or more) assistants who advise the referee on things they have seen so that the referee may take action, if needed. In most cases (except in international matches where there may be a language barrier), the referee will use his voice to warn players of poor behavior, announce advantage or the lack of a foul, and other points to keep the game flowing smoothly.
