∙ 14y agoThe body absorbs nitrogen at any depth. Due to the pressure as you go deeper, you absorb the gas quicker than if you were near the surface. These gas bubbles expand as you rise from the depths. A good example is to take a blown up balloon with you when you go swimming. Watch what happens when you pull it deeper underwater. Then release it. Imagine your lungs were full at depth and you rise too quickly! They could not expand as a balloon could and would burst.

It has to do with the change in pressure on the body. The Bends happen when the body experiences a quick decrease in pressure. We mostly associate The Bends with a diver ascending too quickly from a deep depth back to the surface. But "decompression sickness", as it is more formally called, can happen from changes in altitude, too, or even after exiting mines and going back to the surface.

Divers carry with them tanks containing air in them. The air present in these tanks has different composition from the normal air. It has 32% oxygen, 56% Nitrogen and 12% Helium. It is done so as to avoid creation of bends inside the body of divers when they come out of water.
Why scuba divers stop diving?
There are many reasons for stopping a dive. If you're running low on air, dangerous water conditions, cramps are also common on dives as well as the bends.
