Best Answer

The Patriots were formed when Frank Leahy, a famous Notre Dame football coach, convinced Boston-area businessman William H. "Billy" Sullivan, a former PR aide for the Boston Braves Baseball team, to join the startup American Football League in 1959. The AFL formed with eight teams, of which the Boston Patriots were one. They became the New England Patriots when they moved from Boston to nearby Foxboro, MA, in 1971.
