All of the different nationalist movements around that time had a different idea of what being 'Irish' meant. Arthur Griffith's Sinn Féin movement regarded Irishness as the willingness to work hard and fight for Ireland's wellbeing, something that Griffith himself was very good at. The Gaelic League, founded by Douglas Hyde and Eoin MacNeill, was originally supposed to be for all classes, religions and races who wanted to learn the Irish language. It gradually became more nationalistic, partly because of the IRB men who infiltrated it, until the constitution was changed to make reference to a republic. Padraig Pearse, coming from a background in the Gaelic League, said that an Irish republic would have to be "not free merely, but Gaelic as well"; they believed the ability to speak the Irish language was a crucial part of being Irish. The GAA saw the ideal Irish person as a strong young man, fit from his involvement in Gaelic sports and willing to fight on Ireland's behalf. The nationalistic sentiments in the GAA were mostly added by IRB men who hijacked the organisation to provide them with men they could talk round to their republican cause. DP Moran and his followers believed that being a Catholic was of vital importance to being Irish; they campaigned for Catholic rights by boycotting Protestant-run businesses.
