In the case of the city of Pompeii, the volcano's lava and ashes preserved remarkable ruins of that city that showed Roman culture, homes, monuments, and other artifacts that gave them an excellent idea about Roman life. Pompeii's ruins could be called a "city frozen in time" by the lava of Mt. Vesuvius.
