William Hulbert is not credited with discovering Baseball, he is credited with being one of the founders of the National League that began play in 1876. He was President of the Chicago White Stockings ball club that played in the American Association in 1875. He was unhappy with the way that league was run, with all of the contract jumping and favoritism shown to the clubs that played in the eastern U.S., so he proposed to start a new league on the principals of fair play and integrity. He was able to convince most of the teams in the American Association to join him, and in 1876 the National League came into being.
