The original Aryan designation (a neutral ethnic classification separate from the general Caucasian race) was interpreted by late 19th century racists such as Arthur de Gobineau as a superior race. In its later Nazi (and neo-Nazi) form, it was a concept of scientific racism and white supremacy.
