Well, yes, it was the Greeks who thought it up, but the Olympics were created for a reason.
I think it all started in Athens. Someone important came up with the idea of honoring the gods through sport, hence: The Olympics -in honor of the Olympians (gods) and Olympus.
The Greeks believed that the better shape you were in the closer to the gods you were, the Olympic athletes were believed to be among the people closest to the gods, along with priests and the Oracles and suchlike.
