You should written it down when you bought it. If you bought it from a dealer in the past few years, he should have recorded the serial number in his "bound book" when you purchased it and may be able to find it (but he certainly won't want to dig out his old records, so you should at least know when you bought it).
If it has been reported stolen, you might be able to find out by asking the police to run the serial number.
the answer is no
No. You won't be returned a firearm which has the serial number removed.
Please note- Most JC Higgins 22s were made prior to 1968, and did not HAVE a serial number. What many people mistake for a serial number is the Sears MODEL number. Until the 1968 Gun Control Act, rifles and shotguns were not required to have a serial number. I'm sorry. You may contact me through my message board if you need more information.
No way to answer. Sorry.
If you think it's stolen, ask the police to run the serial number.
Contact your local police. If it was reported stolen, it should be in the system.
Look up the manufacturer website and type in your Serial Number.
Contact your local police department and give them the serial number. The Police can check on the stolen gun list maintained by the BATFE. If the gun is stolen, the Police will conficate the piece and begin investigation of how it was acquired.
It it has been reported stolen, ask your local police to run it.
Your question is rather vague- however- by chance did you see an internet question where someone asked about a JC Higgins rifle or shotgun- that had YOUR serial number? Unfortunately, there is a simple answer. That is NOT a serial number, but a Sears model number. Prior to 1968, serial numbers were not required by law on rifles and shotguns. Sears marked their guns with a model number- such as 583.134. Thousands of people have taken that to be a serial number. If this is what happened- sorry.
