Balance is key in maintaining the correct two point position. Exercise is going to be very beneficial to you, both on and off your horse. Instructors are very good to help with this, but if you don't have an instructor to help you, ask a friend who might help by lounging your mount while you build your balance skills and lose your dependence upon balancing on the horse. One of the most helpful exercises is for the rider to drop their reins and assume a two point position with arms outstretched. Swinging the body slowly to the left and right helps your balance, as do other arm and body movements. This should never be done alone. Always have a spotter as balance exercises can be difficult in the beginning as both horse and rider learn the movements, etc. As you learn to balance properly, your horse's balance will also change and become much improved as well. You can do the same balance exercises at home too. There are many different versions of these and they can be found on the internet and on video. Having someone video tape you as you exercise will help you learn how you can improve.

In American English, that is called "bareback riding," so perhaps "horseback riding" implies the difference between riding with or without a saddle. Horseback riding and taking care of horses can be the greatest feeling in the world. After a tough day at school, i would come to the barn and ride my horse. I would leave the place feeling great about myself. The feeling of accomplishing something, of having a partner that is closely connected to you (the horse), and of taking care of a horse, all improve your self esteem.
