Pool uses different equipment from carom billiards. Other than the table having pockets, the balls for pool are generally smaller and range from 2.25 inches (57.15 mm) in diameter to 2.375 inches (60.33 mm) in diameter. (By comparison Carom billiard balls are generally 2.375 inches (60.33 mm), or 61.5 millimetres (2.42 in).[1] While UMB, the International Olympic Committee-recognized world carom billiards authority, permits balls as small as 61.0 millimetres (2.40 in), no major manufacturer produces such balls any longer, and the de facto standard is 61.5 millimetres (2.42 in). Modern pool tables range in size from 3.5 feet (1.07 m) by 7 feet (2.13 m), to 4.5 feet (1.37 m) by 9 feet (2.74 m). Modern cues are generally 58.5 inches (148.6 cm) long for pool while cues prior to 1980 were designed for straight pool and had an average length of 57.5 inches (146.0 cm), while carom billiards cues are generally 56 inches (142.2 cm) long.

Regulation size pool balls in the US are 2 1/4 inches in diameter. The cue ball may be 2 3/8 inches if it was designed for use on an older coin operated table. Otherwise, all balls are the same size.

Why does pool table felt shed fibers?

Friction. The movement of the rolling pool balls does no damage to the pool felt. However, the pool balls accumulate pool chalk that is very abrasive. The pool chalk accumulated on the balls and dropping on to the felt both result in tearing of the felt fibers as balls are struck or slide on the table. Occasionally balls bounce or are jumped on the table, resulting in even more damage. Damaged felt is a part of playing pool.

What is the resale value of pool balls not made of Bakelite?

Unless the balls are made of ivory used pool balls have very little value. Balls go out of round as a result of normal play, and therefore a new set of cheaply made $30 balls is almost certainly superior for play than set that has had a lot of use. Ivory pool balls have sold for more than $200 apiece. If the pool balls are not collectible, such as ivory, they have little collectible value.
