Zappas was a philanthropist who financed the revival of the modern Olympic Games approximately 1,460 years after the Ancient Olympic Games had been banned by the first Christian Roman Emperor Theodosius I. Zappas was born in 1800 in Ottoman-occupied north-western Greece in a village called Lambove, near Tepelene, in northern Epirus (now part of the Girokastra region of Albania). He began a military career as a mercenary soldier in the Ottoman army of Ali Pasha who ruled the region from a fortress in Tepelene. Zappas then joined Markos Botsaris' Greek resistance forces in the Greek War of Independence. I'm not sure if he built anything.

The Olympics was created after it ended by a newspaper editor named Panagiotis Soutsos in a poem he wrote called "Dialogue of the Dead". In 1856, Evangelos Zappas wrote a letter to the King of Otto of Greece to re-establish the Olympics which lead to Zappas funding an Olympic game in 1859.

The ancient Olympics, traditionally started in 776 BCE, were held each four years (that four year period between them is called an Olympiad), terminated by the Roman emperor Theodosias II in 393 CE because their conduct had become so corrupt. Olympic games were restarted in 1859 CE by benefactor Evangelos Zappas and also held in 1870 and 1875. The Interational Olympic Committee led by Baron Coubertin started the current Modern Olympics at Athens in 1896, and it is from that date that the modern Olympics sequence is counted, each four years excluding hiatuses caused by war.
