Heaters are usually plumbed in after the filter. The pool filter/pump is what circulates the heated water. Ans: The heater will not work or fire if the pump is not running.

it makes sure the heater is shut down BEFORE the pump does. It is very important if the heater runs without the pump running the water will boil in the lines and burn out the heater. I know this because my electrician didnt wire mine correctly and that's what happened to me. BYE BYE 2,500 heater

your heater is more than likely to be working at night, but simply retain the temperature rather than increasing it. a solar cover will assist this. Are you running the pool pump at night too. Pump not working nothing works.

No it doesn't, Night time heatloss is a big problem for pool heaters, as your pool pump runs it moves heat away from your pool, so you actually increase the night time heat loss by running your pool pump/heater at night. The most economical solution is using a Solar cover and leaving your pump off at night to prevent night time heatloss and then just fire up your heater when the temperatures begin to come back up to daytime levels.
What is the difference between a pool heater and a heater pump?
Heat pump pool heaters use electricity to capture heat. As the pool pump circulates the water, it is drawn from the pool and through a filter and into the heat pump heater. The heater itself has a fan that pulls in outside air and pushes it over the evaporator coil. At this point liquid refrigerant in the evaporator coil absorbs the heat from the outside air converting it into a gas. The gas is then passed through the compressor where it increases the heat. This very hot gas is then sent through the condenser where the hot gas is transferred to the cool pool water circulating through the heater. The heated water is then returned to the pool. A pool heater on the other hand uses the gas directly to heat the water by fueling the combustion chamber.
