Sometimes, in the absense of good evidence that contradicts him, it is ok to accept as true something that someone says. You give him the benefit of the doubt. If he proves himself to be untrustworthy, you would not be inclined to give him the benefit of the doubt in the future.
The referee gave benifit of the doubt. I think that if you believe someone even though they have a reason to lie, you are giving them the benefit of the doubt. so if the referee doesn't see something, and believes what one coach is saying happended, he is giving that coach the benefit of the doubt.
To give someone the "benefit of the doubt" is to believe them more than you don't believe them. To trust them more than not.

You can certainly try, but I highly doubt you have a case.
In a relationship it is often wise to give your boyfriend or husband the benefit of the doubt. Accusing someone without proof can damage the relationship beyond repair.
