Does oil seal go over slotted nut on counterbalance of 1996 polaris 400 sport or do you remove slotted nut to install seal?

Remove the slotted nut, needs a special tool or some can get it off with a punch and a hammer. Trying to put the case with seal on over the slotted nut destroyes the seal unfortunatly
