Most community centers and YMCA's that have an available pool will offer diving lessons during the summer season, and often year-round if an indoor pool is available for public use. This is an inexpensive way to get your lessons and donate small funds to your local community funds.
The best place to look would be in your yellow pages for "scuba instruction". Even if you don't live near the ocean, there are indoor, pool-based lessons.
