The Ted's Root Beer wooden Crates are rare, and I cannot find any that have sold at auction making it difficult to come up with an accurate value. I did come across someone that had picked up several Ted's Root Beer Crates at a tag sale in Connecticut. He was searching for a value as well, and only found one at a "top Memorabilia shop" in Cooperstown for $295.00
Because of it's rarity I would say this is a good price. This Item would appeal to both Ted Williams Baseball Memorabilia collectors, as well as a large community of Root Beer/Moxie collectors. I have seen a Ted's Root Beer Six Pack Carton with 6 empty bottle that sold for $600. The carton should be close to this price range or a little less for the crate, at about $300.-$400. I'm sure these wooden crates saw a lot of use, condition, and the clarity of the printing on the crate will be a factor in value.
Ted Williams was employed by the Moxie corporationas Assistant Advertising Manager for a period of 5 years starting November 1, 1957, at a salary of $1,000 per year, with an option to buy 50,000 shares in the company.
Shortly after Ted Williams Signed on, in December of 1957 the Moxie Corp. introduced "Ted's Root Beer". The product was put out in 8 and 12 oz bottles, and was still being marketed as late as 1967, before being phased out of production.
Be aware of "fantasy pieces" or reproductions of this crate. I have never seen any for the crate, but I'm sure they're out there. reproduction Ted's Root Beer Tin signs, bottles caps, and bottles are very common. Sometimes being passed of as "Original."
I have come across many fake cardboard Ted's Root Beer Advertising Signs that were being sold as "original" with a 1952 copyright. In 1952 Ted Williams was not promoting Root Beer. After six games in 1952 Williams was called up to active duty in the Korean War. Williams a pilot flew combat missions over Korea. Hit by small-arms fire during one run, Williams crash-landed his crippled jet and escaped from the flaming wreckage as he said "Faster than Mickey Mantle" He returned after 39 missions in 1953. and did not sign with Moxie until 1957.
I will leave a link below for more information on the Ted's Root Beer signs.
